Spring of 2012 was such an exciting time to catch a Bridgebuilders show. The sextet was really growing into their live sound as they became more and more comfortable performing with a drummer in the mix.
A well-balanced recording, this show displays each member's contribution to the complex, futuristic folk sound that they are constantly developing. Strong vocals from Chris lead the music through it's peaks and its valleys; he hands over the reigns to Sam's intricate viola work at all the right moments, allowing for an artful trade-off of fiddle/mandolin/bouzouki between Jeremy and Nathaniel as they each work their way through their instrumental repertoire; echoing through each tune is Pete's soulful and funky interplay on the keyboard; Curtis's tight fills both anchor and carry the music throughout the set.
Fearless in stretching out their songs, The Bridgebuilders allow for some mature jams to develop that ultimately break through as highlights of the set. They show exceptional range as a whole entity, switching seamlessly between upbeat, progressive folk tunes to melodic, mid-tempo ballads. The show culminates with the delivery of their ominous and energetic rendition of Little Sadie (a high point of the night).
An appropriate mix of originals, covers, and trad tunes, this show is an exceptional sample of TBBs delivering one of their trademark, high-energy and engaging sets, and is a must-have for any fan of music.
